Scene mapping can be a great tool for improvisers, but it’s hard to get your head around at first. To map a scene is to take each beat of the scene we have first seen, and use it in a new scene and in a new context. It might mean putting a high-stakes scene into a low-stakes situation, but the status doesn’t necessarily change. In order for it to be scene mapping and not merely an analogous scene, each beat of the original scene needs to be clear in the new recontextualized scene. For example, two people on their first day of school might mirror two people on their first day of divorce. For practice, first try having players do some first scenes, and then pitch ideas about appropriate scenarios that would be good for mapping (going away to the army and going away to camp).
